Multiple odd rules cause confusion in Dodgers-Mets game

The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets were subjected to two strange MLB rules during Friday's game.

Mets baserunner Starling Marte tagged up from third base but was originally thrown out at home plate by Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernández to complete a double play in the fourth inning. However, Marte was ruled safe on the sacrifice fly because third baseman Max Muncy was judged to have interfered with Marte's ability to see Hernández make the catch.

The Dodgers were confused and argued the play, but the ruling stood.

Another bizarre rulebook technicality occurred an inning earlier when Dodgers baserunner Michael Conforto also somehow avoided a double play.

Conforto was on second base and Shohei Ohtani was on first with one out. Mookie Betts hit a fly ball that hit off right fielder Juan Soto's glove before center fielder Tyrone Taylor eventually made a barehanded catch. Taylor then threw to second base because Conforto appeared to leave early. However, the umpires ruled that everyone was safe, and the call was upheld after video review because runners can advance as soon as a fly ball touches a fielder in any capacity.
