Padres make history with 21-0 shutout of Rockies

The Colorado Rockies are in the history books for all of the wrong reasons.

The Rockies suffered a 21-0 shutout loss to San Diego on Saturday, with Padres right-hander Stephen Kolek tossing nine innings of five-hit ball. As a result, San Diego is the first team since the Cincinnati Red Stockings in 1889 to score 20-plus runs and have its starter throw a nine-inning shutout, according to Opta Stats.

The contest is also tied for the largest win during a pitcher's individual shutout since 1900, with Kolek joining Red Ruffing of the Yankees on Aug. 13, 1939, and Ed Siever of the Detroit Tigers on Sept. 15, 1901.

Plus, the victory is one of the largest shutout wins in the majors since 1900, according to MLB.com's AJ Cassavell. Pittsburgh beat the Chicago Cubs 22-0 in 1975, while Cleveland matched that score against the New York Yankees in 2004.

In addition to Kolek's shutout, five Padres players recorded three RBIs during the team's rout of Colorado.

Colorado's brutal loss came after Rockies general manager Bill Schmidt said he believed his struggling team could turn things around.

"There are still a lot of games left," Schmidt said Saturday.

"I think we can turn it around, but it's going to take a whole group to do it. The guys are working to get better."

The Rockies own a major-league worst 6-33 record following Saturday's loss.
