The Houston Astros will include rookie outfielder Cam Smith on their Opening Day roster, manager Joe Espada announced Tuesday during an emotional clubhouse moment involving Smith's family and teammates.

The 22-year-old will start in right field Thursday against the New York Mets at Daikin Park.
Smith had a terrific spring training for the Astros, slashing .342/.419/.711 with four home runs and 11 RBIs after coming over in a trade from the Chicago Cubs for Kyle Tucker.
Smith hasn't appeared above Double-A, where he played just five games in 2024 after the Cubs selected him with the 14th overall pick in the draft. His 32 minor-league games are the third fewest of any player in MLB's draft era prior to making their debut, according to The Athletic's Chandler Rome.
The Florida native will occupy a spot in Houston's outfield along with Jake Meyers and Jose Altuve, who will be the Astros' starting left fielder after spending his entire career at second base.
Smith was drafted as a third baseman and never played outfield - aside from three games in the Cape Cod League - before this spring.
Infielder Zach Dezenzo made the team as well, while outfielder Cooper Hummel did not, according to Rome.
