Baltimore Orioles infielder Jordan Westburg has identified the culprit for a recent bout of back soreness.
Westburg said Wednesday that sleeping on a soft mattress during spring training has led to the issue.
"I’m used to sleeping on a rock back home, and my Airbnb has a little bit of a softer mattress," Westburg said, per Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Banner. "It was something I was trying to be stubborn through, which was stupid of me, but I got a mattress topper, and I feel much better."
Westburg has appeared in just one game so far this spring. The 26-year-old has resumed baseball activities and is hoping to return to the lineup later this week.
"I don't know if it's something with being athletes, softer mattresses kind of putting you in bad posture," Westburg said. "It's just what I've learned through my experience and getting older, a softer mattress is no good. I might sleep better on it the first two nights, but it's no good for me."
Westburg hit 18 home runs with 63 RBIs and a 129 OPS+ last season en route to making his first All-Star Game.
