The San Diego Padres agreed to a minor-league deal with veteran first baseman Yuli Gurriel, reports the New York Post's Jon Heyman.
Gurriel, 40, will reportedly earn $1.25 million in the majors with another $1 million possible via incentives if he makes the big-league team. He's also guaranteed $140,000, even though his pact is a non-roster invite, Heyman adds.
The former batting champion split last season between the Kansas City Royals and the Atlanta Braves' Triple-A affiliate in Gwinnett. He slashed .241/.338/.296 with six RBIs in 18 big-league games with the Royals.
Gurriel brings championship experience to the Padres after winning two World Series with the Houston Astros. He also claimed a Gold Glove in 2021.
The Padres have been busy of late, adding Nick Pivetta, Jason Heyward, Connor Joe, Kyle Hart, Gavin Sheets, Elias Díaz, Ron Marinaccio, and Martín Maldonado over the past month.
