Phillies land Luzardo from Marlins in 4-player trade

The Philadelphia Phillies acquired left-hander Jesús Luzardo and catcher Paul McIntosh from the Miami Marlins for prospects Starlyn Caba and Emaarion Boyd, both clubs announced Sunday.

Philadelphia designated left-hander Tyler Gilbert for assignment to make room for Luzardo on the 40-man roster.

Luzardo amassed a 5.00 ERA with a 1.25 WHIP and 58 strikeouts over 66 2/3 innings (12 starts) during an injury-plagued 2024 campaign. However, he authored a 3.48 ERA and 10.6 K/9 over a combined 279 innings (50 starts) across 2022-23.

The 27-year-old is set to make around $8.6 million in 2025, and he's arbitration-eligible through 2026.

The addition of Luzardo gives the Phillies arguably the best and deepest rotation in baseball.

Caba was the No. 4-ranked prospect in the Phillies' minor-league system and Boyd sat in the 23rd spot, according to MLB Pipeline. The former is a 19-year-old shortstop who hit two homers with 37 stolen bases and a .762 OPS across 52 Rookie Ball games in the Florida Complex League last season. Boyd, 21, recorded three home runs with 27 steals and a .647 OPS over 96 Single-A contests in 2024.

McIntosh, 26, hit 12 homers with 55 RBIs and a .725 OPS in 117 Double-A games in 2024.

The Chicago Cubs were reportedly trying hard to trade for Luzardo, but a deal never materialized.
