Alonso not concerned about Mets' future, has 'gut feeling' it'll work out
New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso isn't worried about his future with the only franchise he's known and his pending free agency on the horizon.
The slugger said he has "a gut feeling" the Mets will make the playoffs and that his discussions with the club will work out positively in free agency, according to the New York Post's Joel Sherman.
"Whatever happens in free agency happens. I'm not really too concerned about that," Alonso said.
The 29-year-old is in the midst of his worst season but has still produced a .246/.331/.474 slash line with 33 home runs, 31 doubles, and 82 RBIs in 151 games.
Alonso said the 2024 campaign "necessarily isn't my standard," and his focus down the stretch is to win and "contribute to the winning culture."
As his free agency has approached, the slugger's future in New York has been a talking point for the past couple of seasons. He reportedly rejected a seven-year, $158-million extension from the Mets in June 2023 but expressed a desire to remain in New York in July amid trade rumors.
Alonso enters free agency as one of the top players available after six terrific seasons with the Mets, hitting 225 homers and posting an .858 OPS in 835 games.
