The Pittsburgh Pirates are selecting the contract of right-hander Domingo Germán from Triple-A, a source told Alex Stumpf of MLB.com.
Germán's minor-league contract with the Pirates contained an opt-out that could be exercised if he wasn't in the majors Aug. 9, Stumpf reported.
Germán could be a candidate to join the Pirates' rotation when they visit the Los Angeles Dodgers this weekend. Mitch Keller, Paul Skenes, and Bailey Falter are currently scheduled to pitch against L.A.
The 32-year-old spent his first six big-league seasons with the New York Yankees and threw the 24th perfect game in MLB history last June. However, his 2023 season ended two months later when he voluntarily entered an alcohol treatment program following a clubhouse incident. During a confrontation with his Yankees teammates shortly before agreeing to enter treatment, Germán reportedly flipped a couch and smashed a television.
Pittsburgh originally signed Germán to a minor-league contract in March, then released him July 16 and re-signed him four days later. He's spent most of this season pitching for Triple-A Indianapolis, where he put up a 5.29 ERA and 1.43 WHIP with 66 strikeouts and 31 walks over 13 starts.
Over his six-year big-league career, Germán owns a 31-28 record with a 4.41 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 543 strikeouts across 522 1/3 innings.
