Hoyer: Cubs unlikely to be buyers at trade deadline

With the July 30 trade deadline approaching, Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said that Chicago will likely consider moves to help the team in 2025 and beyond.

The Cubs are 48-53 this season and, despite sitting 3.5 games of a wild-card spot, have only an 8.4% chance of making the playoffs, according to FanGraphs.

"I think where we are right now, I would say that moves only for '24 - I think unless things change over the next week, I think we probably won't do a lot of moves that only help us for this year," Hoyer told reporters Monday, according to 670 The Score.

However, Hoyer left the door open for a change of plans if the Cubs manage to string together some wins over the next week.

"The next seven games obviously matter," Hoyer said. "Certainly, we saw what could happen last year. So, you never firmly plant your feet. You have to be able to be nimble."

The Cubs have made the postseason only once since 2018 and haven't won a playoff series since 2017.
