Dodgers DFA Paxton, promote No. 4 prospect Ryan
The Los Angeles Dodgers designated left-hander James Paxton for assignment and promoted their No. 4 prospect, River Ryan, the club announced Monday.
Paxton owns a 4.43 ERA with 1.45 WHIP and 64 strikeouts over 89 1/3 innings (18 starts) in 2024 after inking a one-year, $7-million deal in the offseason.
"James was an absolute pro. We were all fortunate to get to have him don the Dodger uniform," manager Dave Roberts said, according to Eric Stephen of True Blue LA. "It's one of those decisions that are very difficult, trying to understand the guys we have coming back, the guys we want to get looks at, in particular some starters. It was a difficult decision."
Tyler Glasnow is set to rejoin the Dodgers' rotation this week and Clayton Kershaw is scheduled to make his first start of the season Thursday.
Paxton, 35, has authored a 3.76 ERA with 9.5 K/9 over 11 years with the Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and Dodgers.
Ryan amassed a 2.22 ERA with 11.8 K/9 over 24 1/3 innings (eight starts) in the minors this season.
