Dodgers' May out for season after esophageal surgery
Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Dustin May will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn esophagus, the team announced Saturday.
While he's expected to make a full recovery, May won't be able to participate in physical activity for the next two months, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan.
"While at dinner on Wednesday, Dodger right-hander Dustin May experienced sudden pain in his esophagus and stomach that continued after he returned home," the Dodgers said in a statement obtained by Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times. "He contacted the medical staff and ultimately underwent successful surgery on his esophagus. May will not return to pitch for the Dodgers this season."
May hasn't pitched this season after undergoing flexor tendon surgery last year. The 26-year-old was set to start a rehab assignment in the coming weeks before the esophageal surgery.
The Texan has been an effective member of the Dodgers' rotation when healthy, posting a 3.10 ERA and 8.2 K/9 in 191 2/3 innings.
Rotation members May, Tyler Glasnow, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Walker Buehler, Clayton Kershaw, Tony Gonsolin, and Emmet Sheehan are all on the injured list.
