Report: Alonso rejected $158M extension last June
The New York Mets offered first baseman Pete Alonso a seven-year, $158-million contract extension in June 2023, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
However, the two sides never got close to reaching an agreement, per Sherman.
Ex-Mets general manager Billy Eppler reportedly made the offer to Alonso's former agency, Apex Baseball.
The proposed deal was inspired by the eight-year, $168-million extension Matt Olson signed with the Atlanta Braves in March 2022, notes Sherman.
Alonso, who's now represented by Scott Boras, can test free agency after this season.
The three-time All-Star has 10 homers with 23 RBIs and a .765 OPS over 44 games entering Saturday's action. The 29-year-old reached the 40-homer plateau three times over five years heading into 2024, including a career-high 53 in 2019 when he won NL Rookie of the Year.
