Yankees' Loáisiga to have season-ending elbow surgery
New York Yankees right-hander Jonathan Loáisiga has a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow and needs season-ending surgery, the team announced Saturday.
The operation is not Tommy John surgery and is expected to require 10-12 months of recovery time.
Loáisiga was placed on the 60-day injured list by the Yankees on Friday with what was first diagnosed as a flexor strain after he appeared in three games this campaign.
The hard-throwing reliever missed all but 17 contests last season due to right elbow issues.
Loásiga posted a 4.13 ERA and 3.57 FIP during his last healthy campaign in 2022. The Nicaraguan's best year came in 2021 when he authored a 2.17 ERA and 2.58 FIP in 70 2/3 innings.
The 29-year-old is eligible for free agency at the end of the season.
