Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday after suffering a dislocated left shoulder, the team announced.

Infielder David Hamilton was recalled from Triple-A Worcester to fill Story's roster spot.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said that Story suffered a shoulder subluxation rather than a full dislocation, according to Alex Speier of The Boston Globe. A subluxation means that the shoulder is immediately placed back into the joint on its own after being dislocated, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine.

There's no timetable for Story's return yet, Breslow added, per Kyle Glaser of MLB.com. Story will visit doctors in Boston on Monday to determine whether there's any additional damage to his shoulder and if he'll require surgery.

An emotional Story described the injury as "significant," according to Speier.

Story dislocated his shoulder when he dove to try to grab Mike Trout's base hit during Friday's game in Anaheim. He immediately grabbed his shoulder in what seemed like intense pain and walked off with trainers after being tended to for several minutes. An MRI on Saturday confirmed the dislocation.

Injuries have limited Story to just 145 games in a Red Sox uniform since he joined the team in 2022. He battled hand and heel issues during his first year in Boston and then missed the majority of last season while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery.

The 31-year-old owns a .617 OPS with four RBIs through eight games of 2024.

Boston's choices to replace Story at shortstop include platooning the left-handed-hitting Hamilton with his righty-hitting counterpart Pablo Reyes. The team could also move rookie Ceddanne Rafaela, who's been starting in center field this year, back to the infield. Offseason acquisition Vaughn Grissom, who started his year on the IL with a hamstring injury, is a long-term option for the position once he's healthy.
