The New York Mets shut down outfielder Starling Marte on Wednesday, manager Buck Showalter said, according to The Athletic's Will Sammon.
Marte hadn't appeared in a game since Aug. 5 because of a strained right groin he sustained two games after returning from a long IL stint caused by migraines.
The 34-year-old finishes the 2023 campaign having appeared in 86 games, hitting .248/.301/.324 with five home runs, 28 RBIs, and 24 stolen bases. He earned $20.75 million.
Marte inked a four-year, $78-million deal with the Mets before the 2022 campaign. He was an All-Star last season when he posted an .814 OPS with 63 RBIs and 18 steals.
The Mets have six games remaining in what's been a disastrous campaign. They entered the year with lofty expectations and MLB's largest payroll but were mathematically eliminated from postseason contention last Friday.
