The San Diego Padres shut down right-hander Joe Musgrove for three weeks after an MRI revealed inflammation in the capsule of his throwing shoulder, president of baseball operations A.J. Preller said on Friday, according to The Athletic's Dennis Lin.
"We're not ruling him out for this year," Preller added, according to MLB.com.
It's a big blow to the Padres' starting rotation after the club decided not to sell at the trade deadline in hopes of making the postseason.
Musgrove owned a 3.05 ERA and 3.54 FIP in 17 starts spanning 97 1/3 innings before he missed a start on Wednesday due to shoulder soreness.
The 30-year-old has been one of San Diego's top starters since the team acquired him from the Pittsburgh Pirates prior to the 2021 campaign. He signed a five-year extension with the club in August of 2022.
The Padres recently acquired veteran left-hander Rich Hill at the trade deadline. He was expected to fill the void left by a shoulder injury to Michael Wacha.
