The Boston Red Sox were quiet at the trade deadline but held negotiations for one of their most consistent offensive performers.
The Red Sox and Miami Marlins had extensive trade talks for veteran infielder Justin Turner, sources told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.
The Marlins reportedly felt a deal for Turner was close but pivoted to trades for Josh Bell and Jake Burger when discussions didn't advance, Rosenthal adds.
Turner signed a one-year contract with a $13.4-million player option for the 2024 campaign this past offseason after spending nine years with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The 38-year-old has enjoyed a strong season at the plate in 2023. Turner is slashing .286/.356/.481 with 17 home runs, 71 RBIs, and a 122 OPS+ across 102 games this season.
The Red Sox made a few minor trades at the deadline, including the acquisition of infielder Luis Urias from the Milwaukee Brewers.
