The Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers had a trade in place for Eduardo Rodriguez, but the left-hander used his no-trade clause to shut down the deal.

Manager Dave Roberts admitted he was surprised that Rodriguez blocked the deal, stating: "Obviously I don't know what’s going on in his life, his mind, and comfort level," according to Matthew Moreno of Dodger Blue.

The Dodgers were one of the 10 teams on Rodriguez's no-trade list.

"It's not just checking a box on a piece of paper," Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris said, according to Jamal Spencer of WZZM13. "We had steady communication throughout. At the end of the day, Eduardo wasn't comfortable with the deal that was presented to him."

Rodriguez's preference is to pitch on the East Coast to be close to family, players that know the pitcher told Sportsnet LA's David Vassegh.

In the waning moments of the trade deadline and seemingly in the wake of losing out on E-Rod, the Dodgers added left-hander Ryan Yarbrough from the Kansas City Royals. Yarbrough, 31, has posted a 4.24 ERA and 4.29 FIP over 14 games this year.

In exchange, the Royals are set to receive minor-league infielder Devin Mann and outfielder Derlin Figueroa, the team announced.

Los Angeles was on the hunt for starting pitching, and the 30-year-old hurler was one of the top arms available heading into the final hour of the trade deadline.

Rodriguez is in the midst of a solid campaign, authoring a 2.95 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 15 starts. He's eligible to opt out of the final three years and $39 million left on his contract at the end of this season.
