Cubs land Candelario from Nationals for 2 prospects

The Chicago Cubs are committed to buying before Tuesday's trade deadline.

The Washington Nationals dealt third baseman Jeimer Candelario and cash considerations to the Cubs for prospects DJ Herz and Kevin Made, the Nationals announced Monday.

Candelario has gone deep 16 times with 53 RBIs and an .823 OPS over 99 games amid a career season for the Nationals. The 29-year-old is set to hit free agency after the 2023 campaign.

Chicago's addition of Candelario comes after the club pulled within four games of the NL Central lead and 3.5 games out of the final wild-card spot following a recent eight-game winning streak.

Meanwhile, Made was the No. 14 prospect in the Cubs' minor-league system, while Herz sat at No. 16, according to MLB Pipeline. The 20-year-old Made is a shortstop who has three homers with a .683 OPS over 70 games in Single-A this season. Herz, 22, is a left-hander with a 4.73 ERA and 12.2 K/9 across 14 starts in Double-A.
