The St. Louis Cardinals are placing right-hander Adam Wainwright on the injured list due to concerns about his shoulder, manager Oli Marmol said Tuesday, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Marmol added that Wainwright has been dealing with a variety of limitations and will undergo further evaluation, per Katie Woo of The Athletic.
"The plan is to come back strong," Wainwright said, according to Goold. "I'm either going to come back and pitch great, or I'll be a great cheerleader. The plan is the first one. The plan is I'm not giving up."
Wainwright allowed seven runs (four earned) on seven hits (two homers) with three strikeouts and two walks over 3 1/3 innings in a 15-2 loss to the Miami Marlins on Tuesday.
The Cardinals legend is experiencing the worst season of his 18-year career in his final MLB campaign. The 41-year-old owns a ghastly 7.67 ERA with 1.99 WHIP over 51 2/3 innings (11 starts) in 2023.
"There's a lot left in me as a competitor and as an athlete than I'm out there showing," Wainwright said. "I don't want to show that anymore. I want to be great."
