Houston Astros right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. will miss the remainder of the 2023 campaign after undergoing surgery on his right forearm to repair a flexor tendon and remove a bone spur, general manager Dana Brown announced Wednesday.
Brown added that McCullers originally suffered the injury during Game 4 of the 2021 ALDS but aggravated it during a bullpen session in spring training last February. He has yet to pitch this year.
"After the injury happened in February, Lance worked his tail off to get back on the mound," Brown said in a statement. "This guy is a warrior and did everything in his power to get back. But each time he built himself up to an increased pitch total off the mound, the pain would come back."
McCullers, who only made eight regular-season starts last year because of the flexor tendon strain, owns a career 3.48 ERA with 10.0 K/9 over seven seasons with the Astros. The 29-year-old has helped Houston win two World Series titles.
