Abreu takes responsibility for Astros' loss, feels like 'absolute crap'

Houston Astros first baseman Jose Abreu blames himself for his team's 3-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday.

"We lost the game because of me," Abreu said through an interpreter, according to the The Athletic's Chandler Rome. "I take full responsibility. I feel like absolute crap."

The slugger made a baserunning blunder during a crucial moment in the seventh inning.

With his team down by a run, Abreu hit a single to open the frame and moved to second following a Chas McCormick hit. But the veteran infielder was caught stealing between second and third after straying too far off the bag. Garcia would get out of the inning afterwards unscathed.

Abreu then struck out swinging to end the game against Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano, giving the Astros their third straight loss to Toronto.

It was the latest bad game for the 36-year-old, who has been a disappointment during his first season with the Astros after signing a three-year, $58.5-million contract in the offseason.

The 2020 AL MVP is hitting just .217/.277/.265 with one home run in 61 games, while playing below-average defense at first base as measured by Baseball Savant's outs above average and FanGraphs' defensive runs saved.
