The Arizona Diamondbacks are designating left-hander Madison Bumgarner for assignment, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan.
Bumgarner is still owed more than $34 million from the five-year, $85-million deal he signed prior to the 2020 campaign.
Once he clears waivers, Bumgarner is eligible to sign with any team for the major-league minimum salary of $720,000.
If the Diamondbacks do move on from Bumgarner and eat the rest of his contract, it'd make sense that he'd try to steer himself to the Rangers. There is a ton of trust shared with new Texas Manager Bruce Bochy, built on three championships.

The 33-year-old got off to a rough start this season, authoring a 10.26 ERA in four starts for the first-place D-Backs.
Bumgarner owns a 15-32 record with a 5.23 ERA and 5.18 FIP in 69 starts since joining Arizona.
Left-hander Tommy Henry will start the next time Bumgarner's former spot in the rotation comes up, a source told the Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro.
Bumgarner made a name for himself with the San Francisco Giants, where he was a four-time All-Star and three-time World Series champion. He also earned NLCS and World Series MVP honors in 2014.
