The Kansas City Royals and reliever Aroldis Chapman agreed to a one-year, $3.75-million contract with performance bonuses, a source told Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.
The seven-time All-Star closer reportedly joins the Royals after recently working out for the Miami Marlins. However, the Marlins never made an offer to the left-hander, according to Craig Mish of the Miami Herald.
The San Diego Padres were also rumored to be interested in Chapman.
The 34-year-old posted a 4.46 ERA with 1.43 WHIP and 10.7 K/9 over 43 appearances during a down year with the New York Yankees last season. He never pitched in the 2022 postseason after the team fined him for skipping a mandatory workout.
Chapman owns a career 2.48 ERA with 315 saves and 1,045 strikeouts over a 13-year run in the majors with the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs, and Yankees. He won a championship with the Cubs in 2016.
