The Philadelphia Phillies exercised Aaron Nola's $18-million option Monday, retaining the right-hander for the 2023 season, the team announced.
Philadelphia also declined its $17-million option on second baseman Jean Segura, making him a free agent. Righty Zach Eflin is also headed to the open market after declining his half of a $15-million mutual option.
Nola, 29, will now be in his final year of a four-year contract that originally guaranteed the former All-Star $45 million. Over the five-year deal, Nola will have earned nearly $57 million.
The right-hander will likely earn Cy Young consideration after authoring a 3.25 ERA and 2.58 FIP over 205 innings. He helped lead the Phillies to their first NL pennant in over a decade, posting a 4.91 ERA and 3.74 FIP in five postseason games.
Eflin, 28, has been with the Phillies since 2016 and is one of their longest-tenured players behind Nola. The former first-round pick transitioned full time to the bullpen in September after returning from a knee injury.
In his new role, he posted a 1.17 ERA and 1.16 FIP over 7 2/3 innings while collecting one save. He also made 10 relief appearances in the postseason, owning a 3.38 ERA and 2.64 FIP in 10 2/3 frames.
Segura spent the last four seasons with the Phillies, settling in as their everyday second baseman. The 32-year-old hit .277/.336/.387 with 10 homers, 33 RBIs, and 13 stolen bases in 98 games this campaign and contributed another 12 hits during Philadelphia's playoff run.
