Yankees place Chapman on IL with Achilles tendinitis
The New York Yankees placed left-hander Aroldis Chapman on the 15-day injured list with left Achilles tendinitis, the team announced Tuesday.
The closer last appeared in Sunday's game, allowing a go-ahead home run to Chicago White Sox outfielder AJ Pollock during a sloppy inning of relief that also included a walk, a hit by pitch, a passed ball, and a double.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Chapman was receiving treatment for an Achilles injury after Sunday's loss and that an MRI came back negative.
The 34-year-old's numbers this season aren't reminiscent of his best years, but he's still nine-for-nine in save chances and striking out 9.6 hitters per nine innings.
His 3.86 ERA and 6.4 BB/9 are career highs.
Catcher Kyle Higashioka was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list to take Chapman's place on the active roster.
