Chicago White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson was suspended one game and fined an undisclosed amount for making an inappropriate gesture toward fans during Wednesday's game in Cleveland, Major League Baseball announced Friday.
Anderson is appealing the suspension and will be available to play until his appeal is heard. He was in Chicago's lineup Friday.
During the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader at Progressive Field, cameras caught Anderson directing the middle finger toward fans while in the field.

The incident came in the midst of a rough game for Anderson, who made three errors during Chicago's 11-1 loss to the Cleveland Guardians.
"I have to be a bigger person in that situation and just suck it up or whatever is being said," Anderson told Scott Merkin of MLB.com about the incident after Friday's game. "It's something I have to grow from. It's something I already learned from."
Anderson entered play Friday hitting .333/.351/.528 with one home run, five RBIs, and two stolen bases through his first nine games. The 28-year-old missed the first two games of the season while serving a suspension for making contact with an umpire last September.
