Reds trade Gray to Twins for pitching prospect
The Cincinnati Reds traded right-hander Sonny Gray and minor-league pitcher Francis Peguero to the Minnesota Twins for pitching prospect Chase Petty, the Reds announced Sunday.
Gray, a two-time All-Star, authored a 4.19 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with 155 strikeouts across 135 1/3 innings (26 starts) for the Reds last season. The 32-year-old is owed $10.7 million in 2022 and has a $13-million club option for 2023.
"First, I'd like to thank Sonny for everything he has done with our club," Reds general manager Nick Krall said, according to Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer. "He's been a tremendous teammate, a tremendous player, just a really great guy to have. Talking to him was really tough but we felt this was a good baseball deal for us."
The Reds also lost another member of their 2021 starting rotation in November when left-hander Wade Miley was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Cubs. The club is reportedly slashing its payroll this offseason.
The Twins selected 18-year-old Petty 26th overall in the 2021 draft. He was ranked as the No. 7 prospect in their farm system, according to MLB Pipeline.
Peguero, 23, posted a 4.96 ERA and 9.9 K/9 in Single-A last season.
