The Miami Marlins expressed interest in Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Ketel Marte prior to the lockout, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
Miami also discussed a deal with Arizona involving catcher Carson Kelly before acquiring Jacob Stallings from the Pittsburgh Pirates, sources told Rosenthal.
Marte, who's owed $8 million in 2022 with club options for 2023 and 2024, went deep 14 times with a .909 OPS over 90 games last season. The 28-year-old finished fourth in NL MVP voting in 2019 after slashing .329/.389/.592 with 32 homers and 92 RBIs for the D-Backs.
The Marlins and D-Backs have a history of making splashy deals. Miami sent right-hander Zac Gallen to Arizona for infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. at the 2019 trade deadline.
