The Chicago Cubs added to their catching depth on Tuesday by agreeing to a two-year deal with veteran backstop Yan Gomes, the club announced Wednesday.
The deal is worth $13 million, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, who adds there's a third-year option for $6 million and $1 million in performance bonuses each year based on games started.
Gomes split the 2021 campaign with the Washington Nationals and Oakland Athletics, slashing .252/.301/.421 with 14 home runs and 52 RBIs.
Over the course of his 10-year career, the 34-year-old Gomes owns a .247/.299/.421 slash line with 117 homers and 416 RBIs. He was an All-Star in 2018 when he played for Cleveland and won a World Series with the Nationals in 2019.
The veteran backstop joins Willson Contreras among the catching options in the Windy City, although there is a chance Contreras is traded this offseason.
