The New York Yankees signed manager Aaron Boone to a three-year contract extension with an option for a fourth year, the team announced Tuesday.
Boone owns a 328-218 managerial record with New York, and the Yankees have made the playoffs every year during his tenure. He didn't have a deal in place for 2022.
"If (Boone) was entering the free-agent market, I believe he would be the No. 1 managerial candidate in baseball," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.
The Yankees haven't won a World Series since 2009. The team lost to the Boston Red Sox in the American League wild-card game this season, though club owner Hal Steinbrenner reportedly didn't blame Boone for the exit.
"As a team and as an organization, we must grow, evolve, and improve. We need to get better. Period," Steinbrenner said in a statement. "I know Aaron fully embraces our expectations of success, and I look forward to drawing on his intelligence, instincts, and leadership in pursuit of our next World Series championship."
Boone will have a new coaching staff next season after the Yankees didn't renew the contracts of hitting coach Marcus Thames and third base coach Phil Nevin.
