A's Bassitt needs surgery for facial fracture, released from hospital

Oakland Athletics right-hander Chris Bassitt suffered a displaced tripod fracture in his right cheek and multiple lacerations after getting hit in the face by a liner during Tuesday's game against the Chicago White Sox, the team announced Wednesday.

Bassitt was released from the hospital but will require facial surgery. All other tests came back clear, and there is no other damage to his eye or orbital bone.

"Chris will be better than ever and back to doing what he loves soon and thanks everyone for their prayers and support. ... Things like this remind us that in most ways we are of one heart and mind," Bassitt's agents, Meister Sports, said in a statement.

The 32-year-old was carted off the field and transported to the hospital after the scary incident in the second inning.

Bassitt, who become an All-Star in 2021 for the first time in seven major-league campaigns, owns a 3.22 ERA and 1.04 WHIP for Oakland this season.
