The San Francisco Giants have placed catcher Buster Posey on the 10-day injured list with a left thumb contusion, retroactive to July 6, the team announced Friday.
Posey - voted as the NL's starting catcher for Tuesday's All-Star Game in Colorado - won't play in the Midsummer Classic as a result, manager Gabe Kapler confirmed, according to MLB.com's Maria I. Guardado. He was one of two catchers named to the Senior Circuit squad, alongside J.T. Realmuto.

The 34-year-old suffered the injury when hit by a foul tip during the Giants' July 4 game against Arizona and hasn't played since. An MRI taken on Thursday revealed a bone bruise in his thumb, according to the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser. Posey was throwing on the field Friday but was unable to catch the ball, according to KNBR's Mark W. Sanchez.
An exact timetable for his return wasn't given, but Posey could possibly be back when the season resumes at the end of the week.
"This is the cautious, prudent, and right approach to get him ready for the second half," Kapler said, per NBC Sports Bay Area's Alex Pavlovic.
Posey, who's enjoying a fantastic comeback campaign with San Francisco after opting out of last year's shortened season, is hitting .328/.421/.547 with 12 homers and 28 RBIs across 58 games.
Curt Casali and Chadwick Tromp will likely share duties behind the plate in Posey's absence. The Giants have also added top catching prospect Joey Bart to their taxi squad and could activate him this weekend, according to Pavlovic.
The club reinstated right-hander Logan Webb from the IL in a corresponding roster move.
