Reds' Garrett gets 7-game ban for benches-clearing incident with Cubs
Major League Baseball handed Cincinnati Reds reliever Amir Garrett a seven-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for inciting a benches-clearing incident during a contest against the Chicago Cubs over the weekend, the league announced Tuesday.
Garrett will appeal the ban and is available to pitch for the Reds in the meantime. Cubs shortstop Javy Baez also received an undisclosed fine for his role in the fracas.
Tempers flared between the two clubs when Garrett struck out Anthony Rizzo in the eighth inning of Saturday's contest. The benches cleared after Baez, who was eventually restrained by another player, jumped out of the dugout to confront Garrett for showboating.
This isn't Garrett's first lengthy major-league suspension. The left-hander received an eight-game ban in 2019 for an on-field incident with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
