The Washington Nationals are heading into their first game of the season Tuesday with a decimated roster following a COVID-19 outbreak.

Washington placed catchers Alex Avila and Yan Gomes, first baseman Josh Bell, infielders Josh Harrison and Jordy Mercer, outfielder Kyle Schwarber, and pitchers Patrick Corbin, Brad Hand, and Jon Lester on the injured list, the club announced.

Reliever Will Harris also ended up on the 10-day IL due to inflammation in his right hand.

Meanwhile, the team added catchers Tres Barrera and Jonathan Lucroy, infielders Luis Garcia and Carter Kieboom, outfielder Cody Wilson, and hurlers Ryne Harper, Sam Clay, and Kyle McGowin to its major-league roster.

The Nationals have seen their first four games of the 2021 campaign postponed because of safety protocols, contact tracing, and testing.
