Report: Mets owner, Lindor met over dinner to discuss extension
New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor and team owner Steve Cohen sat down for dinner Saturday night to discuss a possible contract extension, sources told Jeff Passan of ESPN.
The Mets have shown a desire to offer Lindor a pact worth $300-million plus, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, who says there's apparent momentum toward an agreement being reached before the 2021 campaign begins.
Lindor, who's eligible to become a free agent after this season, set Opening Day as the deadline to reach an extension. The two sides have four days until regular-season games begin April 1.
Cohen jokingly took to Twitter on Friday to ask fans how much it would take to get Lindor to put pen to paper on a new deal.
Lindor owns a career .285/.346/.488 slash line with 138 home runs and 99 stolen bases while making four All-Star appearances. The 27-year-old would arguably be the best free agent available if he hits the open market next offseason.
