The Toronto Blue Jays exercised the 2022 option on manager Charlie Montoyo's contract, general manager Ross Atkins said Tuesday.

Montoyo's original three-year deal will now get extended to a fourth year.

"He's very steady in-game. His instincts are incredible. His collaboration with his staff has continued to be a strength," Atkins said.

"The character, the ability to create a very positive, constructive environment, is very encouraging. I couldn't be happier working alongside him."

The Blue Jays hired Montoyo prior to the 2018 season. The 55-year-old owns a 99-123 record since becoming Toronto's manager, including a 32-28 mark last season when the Blue Jays made the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
