The New York Mets missed out on a star free agent again, but it wasn't for a lack of effort.

Bauer's offer from the Mets was for $105 million over three years, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. The offer had opt-out clauses after the first and second seasons like his deal with the Dodgers but was valued at about $40 million per campaign, Sherman adds. L.A. will reportedly pay him $40 million in 2021 and $45 million in 2022.

Bauer ended up joining L.A. on a deal reportedly worth $102 million over three years.

The 30-year-old had Twitter in a frenzy over the last 24 hours, teasing Mets and Dodgers fans over hat giveaways on his we.bsite. New York was the favorite to sign him Thursday, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

Bauer's agent showed some love to Mets fans after all was said and done:

The Mets also struck out in their pursuit of George Springer, who ended up joining the Toronto Blue Jays. New York's bid for the star outfielder reportedly fell $30 million short of Toronto's $150 million.

New York has still enjoyed a solid offseason, landing star shortstop Francisco Lindor, pitcher Carlos Carrasco, and catcher James McCann.
