The Los Angeles Angels are exploring additional upgrades at catcher after signing veteran Kurt Suzuki and have interest in Boston Red Sox backstop Christian Vazquez, sources told FanSided's Robert Murray.
However, a potential deal might be hard to pull off since Boston's asking price for the 30-year-old remains high.
Vazquez is coming off solid back-to-back campaigns with the Red Sox, where he ranked fifth among catchers in RBIs and sixth in home runs over the two-year span.
Vazquez's 2019-2020 stats
| SEASON | PA | HR | RBI | OPS+ | fWAR |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 | 521 | 23 | 72 | 103 | 3.5 |
| 2020 | 189 | 7 | 23 | 114 | 1.4 |
The Puerto Rican native is also signed to a team-friendly contract, earning $6.25 million in 2021, with a $7-million team option for 2022.
The Angels are projected to use Suzuki and Max Stassi at catcher next season, although the latter might have a delayed start to his campaign following hip surgery.
Los Angeles is reportedly also interested in trading for Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras.
