Report: Dodgers eyeing Semien in case Turner doesn't return
The Los Angeles Dodgers missed out on DJ LeMahieu in free agency, and Marcus Semien is on their list of infield alternatives in case they can't reunite with Justin Turner, sources told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.
The club could deploy Semien as a third baseman or use the veteran at multiple positions. Semien has played shortstop for most of his career, but Corey Seager already occupies that spot for the Dodgers.
The 30-year-old experienced a down year for the Oakland Athletics in 2020 after finishing third in American League MVP voting in 2019. He hit .223/.305/.374 with seven home runs and 23 RBIs in 53 games this past campaign, all while also regressing on defense.
Semien's advanced fielding at SS
Season | Innings | DRS | UZR | UZR/150 |
---|---|---|---|---|
2018 | 1423.2 | 14 | 8.3 | 6.4 |
2019 | 1435 | 12 | 6.7 | 5.0 |
2020 | 451.1 | -5 | 2.1 | 4.8 |
However, Semien's agent still believes his client deserves a $100-million deal in free agency.
The A's, Boston Red Sox, Cincinnati Reds, and Philadelphia Phillies have also shown interest in him this offseason.
