The Tampa Bay Rays traded left-hander Jose Alvarado to the Philadelphia Phillies in a three-team deal that also involved the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Rays announced Tuesday.
Tampa Bay acquired first baseman Dillon Paulson and a player to be named later from the Dodgers, while the Phillies dealt left-hander Garrett Cleavinger to Los Angeles.
Alvarado made just nine relief appearances in 2020 due to injuries. However, the 25-year-old owns a 3.46 ERA and 10.9 K/9 across four seasons with the Rays. He's also entering his first arbitration-eligible campaign in 2021.
The trade comes two days after Tampa Bay reportedly moved ace Blake Snell to the San Diego Padres in a multi-player blockbuster.
Meanwile, Paulson accrued a .798 OPS with 16 home runs over 117 games between two levels in the Dodgers' minor-league system in 2019. The 23-year-old has yet to play a contest above Single-A.
With Cleavinger, Los Angeles gets a rookie reliever who made one appearance for the Phillies in 2020. The 26-year-old owns a 4.08 ERA in the minors.
