The Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs discussed a deal involving star third baseman Kris Bryant during the summer, sources told Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune.

However, talks between the two clubs faded before a trade materialized, according to Gonzales.

Bryant's potential fit on the Red Sox, or lack thereof, is noteworthy considering the club already has Rafael Devers manning the hot corner.

This isn't the first time the 2016 National League MVP has been involved in trade rumors - his name surfaced several times last winter. Rival executives expect the Cubs to make significant roster moves during the offseason, and the Washington Nationals are reportedly interested in acquiring the three-time All-Star.

Bryant is arbitration-eligible for the last time in 2021 and is slated to become a free agent following the conclusion of the World Series.

The 28-year-old slugger owns a career .280/.380/.508 slash line with 142 home runs over six seasons with the Cubs.
