The Washington Nationals optioned infielder Carter Kieboom to the team's alternate training site Wednesday, the club announced, according to The Athletic's Britt Ghiroli.
Many viewed Kieboom, a first-round pick in the 2016 draft, as Anthony Rendon's replacement at third base coming into the 2020 campaign.
The 22-year-old has only managed 10 hits while striking out 20 times through 17 games.
Kieboom has shown a knack for getting on base with 11 walks, but his OPS sits at a meager .559 after he went 0-for-4 against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday.
The Nationals activated left-hander Sean Doolittle from the injured list in a corresponding move.
