Rays' Chirinos to have Tommy John surgery
Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Yonny Chirinos needs Tommy John surgery and will miss the remainder of the season, manager Kevin Cash told Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times on Friday.
Cash expects Chirinos to miss all of the 2021 season as well.
The club placed Chirinos on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a right elbow strain.
The 26-year-old just returned to the Rays on Aug. 16 after recovering from a triceps injury. He made one appearance against the Toronto Blue Jays before returning to the IL.
Chirinos has been an effective member of Tampa's pitching staff through his three big-league campaigns. The Venezuelan possesses a 3.65 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 47 games (28 starts).
The Rays are plagued by pitching injuries this season - Charlie Morton, Brendan McKay, Jose Alvarado, and several others are out of action.
