Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo announced ace Madison Bumgarner is being sent back to Arizona to get examined by team doctors after the 31-year-old was pulled early against the San Diego Padres on Sunday, according to The Athletic's Zach Buchanan.
Bumgarner will drive to Phoenix from San Diego to get his back looked at, as there doesn't appear to be any issues with his pitching arm, Buchanan adds.
The southpaw allowed four home runs in two innings of work Sunday, with his fastball velocity dipping as low as 86 mph. He was seen having a discussion with a trainer at one point during the game.
Bumgarner's ERA swelled to 9.35 after the outing. He's allowed seven home runs in 17 1/3 innings.
The D-Backs signed the veteran hurler to a five-year, $85-million contract in the offseason.
