The Los Angeles Dodgers optioned top prospect Gavin Lux, the club announced Tuesday.

Lux will work out at the club's alternate site at the University of Southern California because he's no longer on the active roster. He showed up late to camp and didn't impress with his play in the field, reports Alden Gonazlez of ESPN, who adds Enrique Hernandez or Chris Taylor will likely start the campaign as the team's starting second baseman.

The 22-year-old was considered the favorite to win NL Rookie of the Year and is ranked as the second-best prospect in all of baseball by MLB Pipeline. He posted a .705 OPS with two homers in 23 major-league contests last season.

In a pair of corresponding moves, the club agreed to a one-year contract with reliever Jake McGee and transferred right-hander Jimmy Nelson to the 45-day injured list after back surgery.

McGee, 33, was recently released by the Rockies. The left-hander owns a career 3.64 ERA across 10 seasons with Colorado and the Tampa Bay Rays.
