Report: Blue Jays cleared to have training camp in Toronto

The Blue Jays have been cleared by government officials to have training camp in Toronto, but must adhere to a 14-day modified quarantine upon returning from the United States, reports the Toronto Star's Mark Zwolinski, citing a response from the prime minister's office.

The office informed the Blue Jays that their request to play spring training games in Toronto was approved. However, the team must isolate inside a team hotel under the modified quarantine, a source told Zwolinski.

Players on the roster and essential staff would be allowed to enter the Rogers Centre to participate in training camp to get ready for the upcoming season, which is scheduled to begin on July 23 or July 24.

The 14-day quarantine is an "immovable obstacle," according to Zwolinski, which would conflict with MLB allowing players the right to stay at home with their families when playing in their home city.

On Monday, Blue Jays players were reportedly told to prepare to travel to Toronto for training camp at the Rogers Centre, but no official decision had been made yet, according to team president Mark Shapiro.

There has also been no official decision on where the Blue Jays would play regular-season games when the campaign begins. Options include sharing space with the Tampa Bay Rays in Florida or shifting operations to Buffalo, the site of their Triple-A farm team.
