New York Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard underwent Tommy John surgery Thursday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in West Palm Beach, Florida, the team announced Friday, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.
Syndergaard will be out 12-14 months while recovering from the procedure, reports Jeff Passan of ESPN. The 27-year-old starting pitcher was originally slated to undergo surgery in New York, but the city is currently ravaged by a coronavirus outbreak.
The former All-Star will accrue a full year of service time while on the injured list even if the 2020 season is canceled due to the pandemic, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
Syndergaard is expected to return at some point during the 2021 campaign, which will be his last arbitration-eligible season with the Mets before he can test free agency.
