Yankees vote unanimously to stay in Florida

New York Yankees players voted unanimously to stay in Florida and will hold informal workouts while they await direction from Major League Baseball about the resumption of big-league play, the team's player representative Zack Britton said Friday, according to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch.

"We have a shot at a World Series title," Britton said. "We want to be prepared to seize that opportunity. Guys aren't panicking about this thing. We understand that it's serious, but the Yankees have a ton of resources in the area. We feel like this is a good place for us to be."

MLB and the MLBPA confirmed Friday that players could go home after spring training camps were suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Yankees players, training staff, and conditioning staff will remain in the Tampa area. The team held its first workout following the suspension of spring training on Saturday at Steinbrenner Field, general manager Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone said.

"This is going to be something that changes on a daily basis and hopefully becomes more clear as we move along," Boone said. "For right now, they'll be able to work in the cage, the weight room, the training staff providing service they need."

"We'll be here to support that," he added.

Both major- and minor-league players are free to come and go from the complex, and they were also given the option to go home and return to the ballpark at a later date.

"It's going to be pretty much whatever guys want to do right now," Britton said. "Obviously hitters will keep hitting during BP and stuff like that. As of right now, we don't have any intrasquad or sim games. It's going be very similar to an offseason program where pitchers are playing catch in bullpens, hitters hit in the cage and take BP on the field. They're still hashing out an organized schedule so that we're not just doing whatever."

Texas Rangers and Detroit Tigers players also recently decided to stay at their spring complexes after team votes.
