Stanton could miss Opening Day after injuring calf

The injury bug continued to bite the New York Yankees on Wednesday.

Giancarlo Stanton could miss Opening Day after an MRI revealed a Grade 1 strain in his right calf.

"It was a concern yesterday, and I don't think he thought it was that big a deal - just a little soreness," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. "He came in this morning and felt better, but we sent him just to be safe after Dr. Murphy examined him. (The MRI) showed the strain, so it's going to be a couple of weeks."

Stanton injured his calf during a workout Tuesday, according to George A. King III of the New York Post. Injuries limited the 30-year-old to just 18 games last season.

News of the slugger's latest injury comes one day after the Yankees revealed right-hander Luis Severino will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery.

The Yankees are also without left-hander James Paxton (back surgery) and outfielder Aaron Hicks (Tommy John surgery).

Paxton could return in late April or early May and Hicks is expected to miss the entire first half of the 2020 campaign.
